Comic: Drop the Needles

This is Pi Day #034

Did you hear the one about the pirate who liked to knit? Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaarrrrn!

The Kid learned how to knit a few months ago and promptly decided to master the skill by making herself a knit cap … or as we call them here in Canadaland, a toque.

She was also clever enough to figure out that doing a craft — any craft, like say, knitting — got her parents off her back about screen time or other kinds of entertainments that are… well, fun.

Screen time isn’t bad, per se, and kicking back to listen to music is something I enjoy myself quite frequently. It’s just that when you’ve got a dozen other things to do, homework, piano practice, or helping with chores, you have other priorities to consider. Putting on your headphones and listening to four hours of tween-pop while your parents do all the house work is not ideal.

We tend to operate on the assumption these things should be treated as one would treat a bowl of chocolate: small bites in moderation, and not slamming your face into the mix and only occasionally coming up for air.

I guess what I’m trying to say that if you want to gorge on chocolate AND knit at the same time, I’d probably be fine with that. As long as I get a scarf or maybe some warm wool socks out of the deal.
